Kyle Smith is a Battalion Chief and Health and Safety Officer for the San Diego Fire-Rescue
Department. The focus of his responsibilities is on improving health and safety and increasing
workforce performance across his 1,200-member department. Chief Smith has been serving the
citizens of San Diego for over 20 years, with 10 of those on busy truck companies.
Kyle has also worked on several special assignments, including the HazMat team, the Technical
Rescue Team, SWAT paramedic, and FEMA Task Force 8 member. He is also a California state
fire training instructor, lead academy instructor, and executive fire officer. Chief Smith holds a
bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in public administration with an
emphasis in emergency management.
Prior to his fire service career, he was a professional soccer player with the Seattle Sounders.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, he enjoys outdoor activities and athletics with his
friends and family.
