Conducting Effective Risk vs. Benefit Analysis
This program teaches fire service leaders how to quickly and effectively evaluate risks versus potential benefits during emergency responses, using real-world examples and scenarios to improve critical decision-making and enhance firefighter safety.
Class Information
The Fire Service, unlike many other professions, does not have the option to be “risk averse”. However, it also does not have the option to completely disregard risk, as doing so has needlessly cost many firefighters their lives. The challenge then becomes how the hazards and risks posed by every emergency response will be managed. The level of risk that responders are willing to accept should be determined by the potential benefits. This makes conducting a rapid and effective Risk/Benefit Analysis a critical capability for all key decision makers. This presentation will provide the attendees with key information on how they can develop an effective system to evaluate both the risks and benefits that they will encounter. It will provide examples of where an effective system saved lives, and an ineffective system lost lives. It will conclude with an opportunity to practice the critical decision-making process by working through several scenarios.
