Cancer Prevention Pledge
Occupational cancer continues to be one of the greatest threats facing the fire service, impacting firefighters long after the incident is over. Exposure to carcinogens on the fireground, during overhaul, and through contaminated gear, apparatus, and station environments can have lifelong consequences.
The Cancer Prevention Pledge is a commitment to making cancer reduction part of the fire service culture. By taking the pledge, firefighters, officers, and departments commit to following proven best practices that reduce exposure, improve health outcomes, and protect those who serve. From wearing SCBA through all phases of an incident to decontaminating gear and equipment, participating in regular medical screenings, and promoting a culture of accountability, every action matters.
At FDSOA, we believe that firefighter safety extends beyond the emergency scene. Protecting our members means addressing the risks that may not be visible today but can impact lives for years to come. By taking the Cancer Prevention Pledge, you join a growing movement of fire service professionals dedicated to reducing occupational cancer and ensuring that firefighters not only survive their careers—but thrive throughout retirement.
Make the commitment. Lead by example. Take the pledge and help build a healthier, safer future for the fire service.
