Fleet Design and Performance Challenges – A sound apparatus/vehicle specification and maintenance program are important to all government agencies of all sizes. Be it a volunteer, combination or career department, reliable vehicles and equipment in appropriate working order is essential to providing all public services to the communities served in a professional and timely manner. Fire, EMS, Wildland, ARFF and HazMat apparatus and equipment that are improperly designed and/or break down frequently due to the outlay and use will lead to an interruption in service to the agency and the community. Having a well thought out and credible plan will not only benefit the departments operations and fleet division and the community it serves, but also the direction of those future needs and funds.

Below is a brief overview of the courses outlined in the current NFPA 1911, 2017 Edition along with the essential Emergency Vehicle Technician Levels required for Certification.

This course is also applicable to driver/operators, engineers, training officers and apparatus committee members.

F1 Maintenance, Inspection & Testing
This course covers the maintenance, inspection and testing of Fire Apparatus as described in NFPA 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing and Retirement of In-Service Fire Apparatus.

F2 Design & Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus
This course covers the standards for fire apparatus as described in NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, and in NFPA 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus.

Level 2 EVT Class

F-3 • Fire Pumps & Accessories
4 Day Class 

This course is an EVT F-3 Fire Pumps and Accessories that will cover fire pumps of all makes and models along with the related accessories and components. The theory and operation of the fire pump class includes the classroom portion along with a dynamic hands-on experience to understand the most current standards as described in NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus and NFPA 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about different brands and types of fire pumps, how to properly perform multiple tests along with hands-on training. A sound vehicle and maintenance and testing program is important to government agencies of all sizes. That’s why understanding proper fire pump maintenance and pump testing are so important.

The course provides discussion of the EVT test taking process so that even taking the test may be understood to be an educational experience. The goal is not only to prepare the student to pass the test but to help the student to develop a mindset that allows them to perform better as a technician in their role of servicing and repairing emergency vehicles

F-3 Fire Pumps and Accessories
This course covers the standards as described in NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus. In NFPA 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus.

Level 3 EVT Class

F-4 • Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems
4 Day Class

The focus of the class is to help the student gain a clear understanding of the basic principles of electricity and how these principles relate to the function of both fire apparatus and ambulance electrical systems along with the components. Components described and explained include batteries, starters, alternators, and inverters. Also included is the function and role of switches, diodes, relays, capacitors, sensors, motors, and control modules. The class will both describe and provide various examples of meters and test probes (including test lights) so that the student may use these tools in a hands-on training portion both in the class room and on a provided ambulance and fire apparatus. Topics discussed include definition of terms, electron theory, AC, DC, Ohms Laws and more. A sound vehicle and maintenance and testing program is important to government agencies of all sizes. That’s why the understanding of electrical systems diagnosing and testing are so important.

F-4 Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems
This course covers the basic design and performance requirements of fire apparatus electrical systems, components of electrical systems, and preventive maintenance and troubleshooting activities.

Level 4 EVT Class

F-5 • Aerial Fire Apparatus
4 Day Class

The Aerial Maintenance Class is an EVT F5 Aerial Fire Apparatus Course. The class will include currently accepted NFPA 1911 Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles and also includes the manufacturer recommended maintenance practices along with the different types of design and construction. The aerial device requires preventative maintenance on a regular basis that includes the visual, operational and load tests as outlined in the NFPA 1911 which also includes the hands-on portion for the student by delving into an aerial device. A sound vehicle maintenance and testing program is important to government agencies of all sizes. That’s why understanding the proper aerial maintenance and testing are so important.

The course provides discussion of the EVT test taking process so that even taking the test may be understood to be an educational experience. The goal is not only to prepare the student to pass the test but to help the student to develop a mindset that allows them to perform better as a technician in their role of servicing and repairing emergency vehicles.

F-5 Aerial Fire Apparatus
This course covers the standards as described in NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus and NFPA +1911, Standard for the Inspection, maintenance, Testing and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus.

Level 5 EVT Class

F-6 • Allison Automatic Transmissions
4 Day Class

This course is an EVT F-6 Allison Transmission that covers the servicing and maintenance, diagnostics and troubleshooting of Allison Automatic Transmissions AT, MT & HT series. For emergency responders, failure is not an option. Allison Transmission has spent decades designing and building fully automatic transmissions that perform at their best in critical situations. Including an Allison fully automatic transmission in the driveline will enable the chassis, body and pump to efficiently work together, improving uptime and performance that this course covers in the classroom and with fire apparatus for hands-on to include operation, maintenance, and diagnostics containing power take-off, auxiliary functions, prognostics, converters, integral retarder and more.

F-6 Allison Automatic Transmissions
