The Fire Department Safety Officers Association(FDSOA) was established in 1989 as a non-profit association. Its mission is to promote safety standards and practices in the fire, rescue, and emergency services community.
The FDSOA plays a crucial role in addressing health and safety challenges facing firefighters globally. The FDSOA is here to provide individual fire departments resources, training, and guidance on everyday safety initiatives along with a focus on crucial health and wellness topics including occupational cancer, cardiac health, and the mental well-being of first responders, as well as resources for the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) and Fleet Managers
To achieve this balance, the FDSOA employs a multi-faceted approach:
1. Training and Education: The FDSOA offers training programs, workshops, and conferences where firefighters can learn about the latest safety practices & techniques, and EVTs can gain knowledge in the areas of apparatus and equipment. This includes education for the Incident Safety Officer (ISO)during emergency incidents, guidance for your Health Safety Officer (HSO), and training for your fleet mechanics and fleet
managers. We offer Pro Board certifications for ISO, HSO, and TIMs, and FDSOA certification in Infection Disease Control Officer and Accident/Injury investigation, in addition to F1-F5 training for EVT commission certifications.
2. Resource Sharing: The association serves as a hub for sharing best practices, research findings, and resources related to firefighter health and safety. By partnering with various associations and organizations,
the FDSOA can pool knowledge and experiences from across the globe. In turn, the FDSOA can assist individual departments by keeping them informed and implementing effective safety measures.
3. Advocacy and Awareness: The FDSOA advocates for legislation, policies, and regulations that prioritize firefighter health and safety. This includes supporting initiatives that reduce exposure to carcinogens and other hazardous substances, as well as raising awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention of occupational illnesses such as cancer.
4. Technical Assistance: Individual departments can reach out to the FDSOA for technical assistance and guidance tailored to their specific needs and challenges. Whether it’s conducting risk assessments, developing safety protocols, or implementing wellness programs, the association offers support that addresses both immediate safety concerns and long-term health risks. 5. Research and Innovation: The FDSOA actively supports and participates in research initiatives aimed at better understanding the health risks faced by firefighters and identifying innovative solutions. By staying abreast of the latest scientific developments, the association can provide evidence-based recommendations to help departments mitigate risks and protect their personnel.
